Okay. I'm a nerd for this comment, but this reminds me of manga, or Japanese comics. I have no clue about western comics because they were never my cup of tea, but manga chapters are released weekly with hiatuses during holidays or at the author's discretion. It's like a little treat to look forward to every week. The longer-running manga have around 1,000-2,000 chapters. I'm not sure how this compares to memoirs and other forms of purely writing (no illustrations), especially those from a time when serialization was more common.

You're so right. I know little about manga except that my niece loves it, but Dickens's novels were all illustrated by his loyal illustrator who went by "Philz." Boz and Philz. The drawings are great. There will be a whole newsletter dedicated to that: How illustrations can work with serialized novels and memoirs (that aren't comics).

Start now on the courses! All posts will have prompts/things to consider in what you're working on. I'll be posting often and am still working out kinks in the community. Do post though!

Wise words from an expert. Good stuff. I just started serializing a thriller novel of mine. First chapter just went up.

Hello Sarah, Thank you for the great workshop last night. I was looking for a way to send an email but this is the only thing I found. I did not pay for the year, only the workshop so I don't know if I can ask for additional help. I was wondering if you had any specific pointers about Diary of an Artist as. Obviously I need to flesh out the Bio!! and I am assuming my about page is too generic. If this is outside my workshop benefits, perhaps I can upgrade for a year?

It's great to have you, and I'm happy to respond! You can also schedule a meeting with me.

https://www.writersatwork.net/meetings

I'd love to go more in-depth than a comment allows for, but let me share some of my thoughts:

1. 'Diary of an Artist' sounds like it will be about an artist writing about art and making art. From looking at your Substack, it seems that you're writing about more than being an artist. That's not a bad thing at all; it's just that you're posting thoughts about life. Like I said last night, that's the urge to write about everything, right? We could flesh out what you're interested in writing about and how to put it under a single umbrella.

2. At our next workshop, we're going to talk about this: how to be sure your Substack is what people think it is and how to retain readers/subscribers.

We can go deep into your bio and About page during a meeting if you're interested!

Thank you, I will think about the meeting. It sounds like I should definitely be a part of the next workshop. In the meantime I will work on my Bio. Right now all I have there is "Artist". I actually laughed when I looked at it after the workshop!

That's so funny! And remember, what's in your bio depends on what you want from your Substack: to sell art? build up an email list? get paid subscribers? etc.

Yes, That might be what I need to figure out. I think I had hoped to find conversations about art and life while at the same time building a community of possibly interested participants for my App. But that might be too far off to even think about now.

Hi Sarah,

I'm new to Substack and I'm having a little trouble finding my way around the navigation. I was considering paying for a subscription with you (it seems like you have helpful information) but I had to choose between the regular and the Super+. Where do I find lists of your old webinars so I can see if they would be helpful to me? My apologies if this isn't the right place for this question. I couldn't find a way to DM you. Thank you!

Please do post here or contact me--either! There's a monthly subscription ($6/mo.), an annual ($50/yr) and the new Pro, which means you get everything in the paid subscription (all posts, interviews, and monthly workshops as they happen), plus the full archive of workshops. You can find the workshops with previews and information here: https://www.writersatwork.net/t/workshops

I'm new and SO excited to be here! I plan to serialize my pet memoir (Pet Tracker) and to write mini-mysteries based on the police tracking and pet detective tracking that I did with my search dogs. I saw a piece on the news that I think @Writers at Work with Sarah Fay will find interesting. A woman who was depressed and suicidal went to Vancouver hospital, was told the wait to see a psychiatrist would be 6 months, and asked if she had ever considered physician assisted suicide. SERIOUSLY!! https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12393501/Vancouver-hospital-offered-medical-assistance-dying-suicidal-37-year-old-woman-told-long-psychiatrist.html

Thank you! The Pet Tracker is about my search dogs, but the sequel memoir will be about my CAT, Cheeto! I think you will REALLY love that one! If you have a minute, here's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsRDAjvFYGY&t=4s a quick video about his "job" as a "target cat" (he was used to train cat detection dogs I trained to find lost cats). I mean, who WOULDN'T brag that their cat was to be featured on Animal Planet, right? :)

Hey Sarah! Hoping you see this. I’m attempting to book a 1:1 with you though due to the currency being in USD it’s saying it can’t be done.

Let me know if you’ve experienced this before or if there’s an alternative way I can book.
